N-propanol is a by-product of the synthesis of methanol from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. In industry, it is prepared from ethylene, carbon monoxide and hydrogen under high pressure and cobalt catalysis. It is synthesized from propylene under the action of sulfuric acid or acetone through catalytic hydrogenation. It is generally used as a solvent.
